Integrative Strategies for Understanding Neural and Cognitive Systems (NCS) FOUNDATIONS and FRONTIERS

Award Info:

The total budget request for a FOUNDATIONS project should not exceed $1,000,000 (including direct and indirect costs, for a project with a duration of 2 to 4 years).

The total budget request for a FRONTIERS project should not exceed $1,000,000 per integrative research thread (including direct and indirect costs, for a project with a duration of up to 5 years).

Description:

All proposals must clearly address how the proposed activity will extend the boundaries of what is currently possible; advance existing literature, knowledge, and technologies; challenge current scientific paradigms, as appropriate; and bridge temporal or spatial scales, levels of abstraction, levels of analysis, or disciplinary or methodological approaches. NCS projects will embrace scientifically important risks and push beyond predictable outcomes. Proposals must address both risk and reward: high-risk, high-payoff approaches are expected.

The program focuses on four aspects of neural and cognitive systems that are current targets of converging interdisciplinary interests. NCS projects must advance the foundations of one or more of these focus areas, which are described further below:

-Neuroengineering and Brain-Inspired Concepts and Designs
-Individuality and Variation
-Cognitive and Neural Processes in Realistic, Complex Environments
-Data-Intensive Neuroscience and Cognitive Science
Proposals must also go beyond the scope of any NSF core program, or they will not be considered responsive to this solicitation. Questions about appropriateness may be addressed to the directorate representatives listed in Section VIII of this solicitation.
